It’s summer time and even though I am in the fashion industry I have a handful of pieces that I reach for on a regular basis. One of them is my Splendid grey long maxi skirt. Its super soft, just the right length to wear flat shoes and it can go from the beach or boat to daytime lunch or evening out. How can you not love it, it’s both big in comfort and long on style.
The long and short of it, ladies…the maxi skirt is here to stay and is a summer staple, so start experimenting. Long skirts are truly back this season, making an appearance everywhere. Team yours with funky boots and and edgy jacket for attitude and style when it cools off in the evening or flip flops and a jean jacket during the day. This is sleek, trailed to the ground to look seamless and endless.
Contrary to popular opinion, it’s not only Amazonian models who can pull off the maxi skirt. Rather, it’s a flattering option for a variety of body types. I am only 5’3 and I can rock that skirt with tee’s, tanks and swimwear.
Try a black maxi skirt with loose layers on top and long necklaces for a sophisticated edge to your dressing. A slim cotton one with a loose tank or tee. Get out there and have fun and look good while you are out there.
I am wearing a Mark Fast short tank a Splendid maxi others available Here here andHere in Kelowna at Influence and LBV.
Tee Shirt is Lauren Moshi available at LBV in Kelowna and the Peace tank is available at Influence
On my feet my very favourite Anine Bing boots and my Tkees flip flops
One of my favourite new brands out there right now is Xsenia & Olya. They have great dresses for women that are comfortable, versatile, and absolutely stunning. I was lucky enough to model some of the collection this past weekend. Here is a picture of the dress plus a photo of me with some lovely, lovely ladies.
Yesterday afternoon I got a message from a friend asking about men’s swim trunks. So I started thinking about men’s swimwear. I never write about men’s clothing. I became totally inspired and up for the challenge.
So here is the deal, the trend right now is the shorter the better. It looks fresher and more fashionable. The last thing you want at the beach is to feel like you are wearing a huge bathing suit, that makes you look like you’re a teenager. “A suit that fits will make you look trim, confident, and manly – and even let your thighs get some sun.” – GQ.
Surf shorts are still around, this is just the more modern approach to them.
If going shorter isn’t for you or your man, have no fear, there are still some great longer surfer shorts out there. Choose a pair with some colour, or a little bit of a pattern such as stripes to still give your swim trunks edge.
If you’re a bit bigger, stick to black with no pattern, as pattern will draw attention to your stomach. If you’re on the shorter side, go with a shorter short, to avoid the tweenager look.
Three brands I want to highlight are Olasul, Hurley, and Zanerobe.
Olasul was created by Lorenz Korder Fort who grew up in Peru, and named the brand after the Peruvian coast line where surfing and the ocean is embedded into the DNA of its residents. The bright colours and shorter lengths make this shorts incredibly fashionable.
You can check out Olasul here
Hurley has been a staple on the beach and surfing scene for a while now. These phantom shorts, have no seem, making them the most comfortable out there. No chaffing, easy to wear, and maybe on the safer fashion side for some of you.
You can check out Hurley’s shorts here
Zanerobe is huge right now. These Australian best friends are absolutely killing it with their Ready to Wear line, and have expanded to swimwear. There are some easy retro looks, like polka dots and stripes, but also some awesome patterns that would make you really stand out in a crowd and show of your confidence!
You can look at Zanerobe online here
I did also find a Men’s Shorts and Swimwear sale on Gilt.com check it out for Fathers Day gifts or for that man in your life. Swim Shorts are half off there today so I would suggest you hustle on making your purchase.

I am always on the hunt for a great t-shirt, but those really great ones are just so challenging to find. I want a t-shirt that is fun, has some edge but not over the top. It has to fit well but not to tight or sloppy. I want it to be soft but not so soft that it snags and gets ratty. Recently I found such a cute Lauren Moshi short sleeve tee, and it has lead me to a new obsession…art and clothing, it’s just so right.
Lauren Moshi is a brother and sister team from LA. I love that Lauren draws all the designs and then they put them onto the clothing. Her art is fun, eye catching and classy with edge. I love the fabric, it is super soft and just seem to float over your body. I do know from my other pieces that there is a price to pay for that super soft material, I will say you have to wash with care. I still throw mine in the wash, but its on hand wash and I lay it to dry. I think even in my hectic life the “hang to dry”, “wash with care” Lauren Moshi is worth it!
So welcome to my closet of funky t-shirts Lauren Moshi you now have the front hanger!
You have to check out the collection, it is so much more than t-shirts. It includes: dresses, tanks, tee’s, sweaters, open cardigan’s, hoodies, sweat pants and totes, all of which are adorned with art! I have a few pieces on my list…take a look here and I think you will too. Lauren Moshi is available at LBV in Kelowna. Check the store listings for your area.
One morning about a month ago I was reading through my usual fashion sites that I do every morning…I like to call it working, and on a small picture on Instagram I saw this cool necklace. It was an old key on a long chain. So I started to do a bunch of research because I liked the style. After a bit of digging I tracked down the source, it was made by The Giving Keys. When I opened the site and started reading I got goose bumps, it was more than a key it symbolized someone’s drive to do better, and a passion to take care of others.
I urge you to read about the founder Caitlin Crosby’s story and how “The giving Keys” came about on her site, it is worth reading about. However to give you a very basic overview: Caitlin employs homeless people in a shelter to engrave the keys. The idea behind the product is that you choose a word that inspires you but you can’t keep your key. You must give it away at some point someone that you feels you need the key more than you.
Speaking of giving it away, I just received mine in the mail this morning after waiting two weeks for it to arrive. I had a random coffee guest this morning and we were chatting and all of a sudden one of my clients from this week popped into my head and I knew my key needed to go to her. So I am going to follow that instinct…darn instinct. Just going to throw it out there for all of you ladies if anyone feels inspired to give me a key, I am totally cool with that…
Keep your eyes open to all of the needs around you, big or small because you never really know the impact you can make with a small jester. Perhaps you hold the key to someone else’s freedom.
You can read about the Giving Keys Here and in Kelowna you will soon be able to buy them at Influence and LBV.
