Apple Body Types: How To Style Your Apple
February 14, 2020Apple Body Type
We all know that not all bodies are created the same. This means that not all fashion advice one size fits all either! Fashion tips that work for a pear, diamond, or hourglass body may not be the right advice for other body types. For all the apple bodied people out there who feel left out by other fashion advice, here’s something just for you!
What is the Apple Body Type?
Most designers and stylists agree on a few different types of body shape. Of course most people won’t fit neatly into one category, but it can be helpful for you to know what kind of advice to seek out! Just a few examples of the common body types include: hourglass, pear-shaped (also called triangle), rectangle, and athletic. You may have also heard of the apple body type described as an “inverted triangle”, meaning that an apple body type person will generally have larger shoulders and bust measurements than their hips. For some inspiration, you can look to apple-bodied celebs that have perfected styling their body: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Katy Perry, and Kate Winslet are all beautiful people making the apple body type look great. No matter what the body type, there’s always a way to style yourself to look fantastic.
What Works for Apple Body Types?
T Shirts
- You may think that with an item this basic, you don’t have much choice. But even small changes in style can make a surprisingly big difference in your look! For apple bodied people, I recommend any kind of t-shirt that opens up the neckline and draws the eye up and takes attention away from the midsection. An open neckline can also allow for accessories like necklaces to further keep attention at the neckline.
- Empire waistline shirts are another fantastic fit for apple bodies. The contour that narrows right under the chest allows for the rest of the shirt to open up and flare out around the midsection. This also allows for more emphasis on the bust for those who can take advantage of it.
- A peplum tee’s ruffle near the bottom makes it another great choice for apple body types, as the ruffle draws the eye down and past the midsection.
Dresses
- Dresses are a great choice for apple body types, and the wrap dress is a style that works for almost everyone, apple body types included! A wrap dress allows for adjustments, too: a shorter dress to show off legs, an open neck for accessories, and the choice of long or short sleeves.
- Contouring a dress is another creative way to highlight your apple body. Whether it’s in the cut of the dress, or even in the color of the fabrics, contour allows you to adjust your silhouette to your liking.
- Dresses that feature asymmetry and ruching are great tools for creating an illusion that can draw attention away from the waist.
- Fit-and-flare dresses like A-line dresses and empire dresses are perfect for apple bodies. The flaring out effect of this style creates balance to emphasize your best assets and allows you to choose length and sleeve options that work for you.
Layering
- The parallel lines created by any kind of layered top can help create an illusion of a narrower torso, and you can achieve this effect with a vest, a jacket, or even a scarf.
Jeans
- Apple body types are perfect for high rise bottoms, and now is the perfect time for high rise bottoms! High waisted jeans avoid the problem of having the waistband sit directly on your widest part.
Color and Texture
- Monochromatic outfits are perfect for utilizing some of the tips listed above, and monochrome works for all kinds of body types. Keeping the same color but mixing textures can break up an outfit in a way that shows off apple bodies at their best.
This primer on apple body types and what works best for them can be a wonderful resource for helping you find the right fits for your body. We all have just one body and knowing how to take advantage of its best assets is key to improving your relationship with yourself and learning to love the shape of your body, regardless of what it is.
