Coachella Vibes
April 22, 2015One of the biggest music festivals in North America has come and gone. Coachella, held over two weekends (this year from April 10-19) is a venue for big music and bigger fashion.
There are a few trends that are “very Coachella” and, lucky enough for those who went, they’re on trend this spring and summer. So you can take the Coachella vibe back to city and rock your look in town.
Kimono One of my favourite trends is one that both the prepsters and hipsters can rock. Kimonos look cool with jean shorts and a tank, but can keep the sun off your shoulders. At night, worn with a pair of gladiator sandals and white jeans or over a little dress, it will keep you just warm on chilly summer nights. Kimonos are perfect for travel, rolling up small enough to fit a backpack or purse. Gypsy Soul Designs, Sugar Skull Kimono, $220
Booties A festival staple, not only for their cool looks but the functional aspect of keeping your toes from being stomped on when the crowd pushes closer to the stage. Also a great city piece, perfect with a little dress or romper and a jean or leather jacket. Isabel Marant, Black Ankle Boots, Isabel Marant
Jean Shorts – At Coachella the shorter the better. This little (literally), edgy trend may need to be modified for the real world. After all, nobody really wants to look at your bum cheeks hanging out on a lunchtime patio. But on that dusty polo field? Game on! One Teaspoon, 1955 Trashwhores, Revolve
Romper Pair a cute floral or emerald jumper with a pair of booties and a floppy hat and you are rocking festival style. For an urban look, add heels, a clutch and a blazer and you’re ready for lunch with the girls. A word to the wise: Jumpers and Port-A-Potties don’t really play nice together. Something to think about. Free People, Izzy Romper, Shopbop
Yellow – You can’t go wrong with yellow this season, no matter what hue. Try it in a dress, a tank or pair of shorts. Tibi, Cami Tank
Backpack A festival favourite and also on trend for the city after a 20-year hiatus. Keep it small and neutral. You’re not trudging along on a five-day hike. It also works for a day out in the city, on your bike, rollerblading or on a stroll down Robson. Aritzia, Linda Backpack
Statement Jewellery A fantastic piece of statement jewellery is always a good idea. The look for Coachella is layers upon layers. For the city you want to dial that back a bit. Something to think about if you are laying on your jewels at Coachella is to watch out for the amount of metal you’re flossing in the hot sun. Maybe ditch the gold and silver for a leather wrap or some beads. Melene Birger
